The pop artist wore a daring Marques Almeida outfit that had elements of both country and rock and roll on the red carpet for the 2022 CMA Awards.
No, you didn’t just go back in time to 2001, also known as the day Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake made pop culture history with their identical double denim moment at the American Music Awards that year. On the red carpet of the Country Music Awards on November 9, Katy Perry was seen donning a denim outfit from head to toe. Do they have a bustier top and a maxi skirt? Are those jeans with such broad legs? Is that a dress or not? Science might never learn. (Editor’s note: It turns out that scientists do know, because Perry’s outfit included pants and a bustier top.) People do, however, enjoy themselves at country music events, that much is certain.
The “California Girls” singer wore a strapless denim dress to the 2014 VMAs, complete with her own Canadian date, rapper Riff Raff, who was dressed in a tuxedo. It’s delightful to note that this isn’t even the first time Katy Perry has emulated Britney’s legendary fancy denim style. The jean patchwork dress that Perry wore as a tribute to Britney and JT was made by Versace, not your mother’s Wranglers.
Perry’s most recent foray into formal double denim saw her rock a denim-on-denim ensemble by London-based label Marques Almeida while performing “Where We Started” alongside country singer Thomas Rhett at the CMA Awards in Nashville, Tennessee. Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida, two Portuguese designers, launched the company in 2011. The company has shown at Paris Fashion Week and won the 2015 LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers and British Fashion Award for Best Emerging Designer. The singer added dangling diamond earrings and diamond and pearl chokers to her acid-wash denim outfit.
Katy Perry, who performed the same night in a deconstructed dark denim dress, also wore pants and a similar corset earlier in the day. In fact, all-over denim is the current fashion trend. Now that’s dedication.
Is this most likely the first time the cool, raw-edged designs of Marques Almeida have graced the CMA red carpet? Maybe; we’d love to see it! Too-serious fashion is no fun at all, and the Canadian tuxedo is always prepared to party.
