Lily-Rose Depp explains why she has been silent in the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard case and criticises the term “nepo baby”

In a recent interview with Elle magazine, Lily-Rose Depp discussed her upbringing, her silence regarding her father Johnny Depp’s defamation case against Amber Heard, and other topics.

Lily-Rose Depp, the daughter of Johnny Depp, remained silent throughout the highly publicised defamation trial between her father and his ex-wife Amber Heard earlier this year. In a recent interview with Elle, the Idol star discussed her upbringing, being called a “nepo baby,” and other topics.

The defamation case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, in which the former couple battled in court over allegations of domestic violence made by the actress against Depp in her 2018 Washington Post op-ed, made headlines earlier this year. Depp won the lawsuit because the jury found Heard guilty of slander, and the actor was given a US$10 million settlement. The actor had even written a moving Instagram post about getting his life back after his trial victory.
Lily-Rose Depp on her father’s court case
Lily-Rose recently shared a number of personal details in the cover story for Elle, one of which was her decision to keep her father’s legal situation quiet in public. She stated: “When something that was so private and intimate suddenly loses its personal nature… I feel incredibly deserving of my own thinking garden.” The 23-year-old also insisted that she didn’t want to be defined by the men in her life and instead wanted to be known for her own accomplishments. Regarding avoiding making public statements, she continued, “I also believe that I’m not here to speak for anyone, and I feel like for a good portion of my professional life, people have tried to define me in terms of the men in my life, whether they be my family members, boyfriends, or any other kind of relationship. And I’m very eager to have the stuff I put out there defined for me.”

She continued, “I know my childhood didn’t look like everyone’s childhood, and it’s a very particular thing to deal with, but it’s also the only thing that I know,” after talking about how Johnny and her mother Vanessa Paradis worked hard to protect her and her brother Jack’s privacy. Before divorcing in 2012, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis were together for 14 years. After meeting Amber Heard on the set of Rum Diary, the actor later wed her in 2015.

Regarding the term “Nepo baby”
In the same interview, Lily-Rose attacked the term “nepo baby” in response to remarks about nepotism. Lily-Rose called the phrase out and went on to say that it is particularly used against women, saying to Elle, “Simply put, it doesn’t make sense. You wouldn’t say, “Well, you’re only a doctor because your parent is a doctor,” if someone’s mom or dad is a doctor and then they grow up to be a doctor. It sounds like, “No, I trained and attended medical school.””

What Johnny previously said regarding his kids
The actor had previously argued that his children were another motivation for going forward with the trial against Heard. In a statement he made following the outcome of his trial, Johnny had stated: “I owed it to my children and to everyone who has continued to stand by my side to tell the truth. Knowing that I have finally succeeded makes me feel at peace.”

On the professional front, Johnny has a music album out and is getting ready to direct again after almost 25 years. The Weeknd will co-star in the upcoming HBO series The Idol with the actor’s daughter, on the other hand. Additionally, Lily-Rose has agreed to star in a Nosferatu remake with Bill Skarsgard. Filmmaker Robert Eggers will write the screenplay and helm the adaptation of the 1922 German horror movie.
