Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and the delight of misheard songs

The lead vocalist for Thunder Road hasn’t been singing one of his best singles with the “official” lyrics. But occasionally, the incorrect version just seems appropriate, according to John O’Connell

We are aware now. The iconic first line of Bruce Springsteen’s Thunder Road has been confirmed as “The screen door slams, Mary’s dress sways” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, contrary to what is written on the Born to Run album jacket, which reads “Mary’s dress waves.”

As confirmation, Springsteen’s longtime manager Jon Landau asserted to the New Yorker that “dresses” are incapable of waving.” Except, of course, they do; the misconception stems entirely from this. In her debut book, The Professor, Charlotte Bronte says, “Frances rose as though restless… her garment fluttered within a yard of me,” and nobody puts Charlie in a corner.
