Prior to the third and final season of “The Wife,” which premieres on November 10, production on the show took a hiatus.
The Wife fans, popularly known as the “5am club,” will reclaim their place as a devoted fan group when the drama resumes broadcasting on Showmax with three episodes each week after spending months off the air.
The Wife’s third season will begin up where season two left off, with the kidnapping of Qhawe’s (Kwenzo Ngcobo) new love, Naledi (Gaisang K Noge).
Before the start of its third and last season, the programme had a production break in May.
The Hlomu series’ first three books, from which the programme takes its cue, were blockbusters, but the show itself had a hit-and-miss history. Particularly among readers of the book series who disapproved of the makers of the show’s creative freedom.
When The Wife originally debuted, fans of the book series and viewers eager to see what all the fuss was about flocked to see the programme, propelling it quickly up the Showmax audience rankings.
It rapidly garnered criticism for diverging from the plot that fans of the book series had grown to like, while others expressed issues with the show’s overall storytelling.
The show’s audience persisted in tuning in despite this criticism.
With the expectation that the programme would get better, many welcomed the pause. Others had requested the break months earlier after concluding they had had enough of the programme.
Actress Gaisang Noge made her acting debut as Naledi just before the programme went on break, and the third season of The Wife will centre on her as she wins over the affections of Qhawe, the most well-liked Zulu brother.
